Field notes

A TikTok Shop product research checklist.

Research is stronger when the record includes both the interesting signal and its limitations.

Illustrative planning record

Keep the record and the reason together.

Starting point

Sample creator mentions and a dated product reference

Keep the source and scope attached to the work.

Useful handoff

A research note with observed facts and a separate verification list

The next owner needs enough context to understand the deliverable.

Review decision

Confirm commercial facts independently before making a purchasing decision.

A named owner should be able to accept, revise or reject the direction.

Set the scope

Name the category, geography, period and decision. Save the source of each observation and its retrieval date. Keep first-party records, estimates and public observations in separate fields so they are not mistaken for the same quality of evidence.

  • Question and comparison set
  • Source and observation date
  • Verified, estimated or unavailable field labels

Check the commercial assumptions

Public attention is not evidence of profitable demand. Verify price, commission terms, fulfillment, returns and product suitability using the appropriate direct sources. Do not use an estimated third-party transaction metric as a settlement record.

Choose a bounded next step

Write down the remaining questions and the person responsible for checking them. A small research follow-up may be more appropriate than an immediate commercial commitment. Preserve the original observations so the reasoning remains understandable later.

Create two columns: observed and needs verification

Put the source, date, product identity and content context in the observation record. Put stock, price, margin and verified commercial relationships in a separate verification list. This distinction prevents a content signal from quietly turning into a business fact when the research is shared. Mark missing information as unknown rather than filling the space with an assumption.

Review the evidence before the recommendation

Check that the comparison uses consistent products and windows. Look for concentration in one creator or repeated copies of the same content. State which observation supports the recommendation and which unanswered question could change it. A useful research checklist should help the team reject a weak interpretation as readily as it helps investigate a promising one.

Try it on one small piece of work.

Choose one category question and a small product set. Record the identity, source and observation date before looking at a change. Create a separate list of commercial facts to verify. Ask another reviewer whether the available evidence supports the proposed next step, or whether the record needs further investigation first.

The exercise can end with a decision to wait. Missing product identity, an inconsistent comparison window or an unverified relationship can be a reason to investigate further. Keep that reason in the record so the next person understands why a promising-looking observation did not become a commercial recommendation.

Questions for the person reviewing the handoff.

  • Is the product identity consistent across the comparison?
  • Can I inspect the source and date behind the observation?
  • Which commercial facts remain unverified?
  • Who owns the next review or verification task?

The reviewer should be able to answer these questions from the handoff itself. Add a missing source reference or a clear unknown rather than relying on a verbal explanation that disappears after the meeting.

Use the structure. Verify the substance.

This guidance helps organize product and creator research. Content observations do not establish verified sales, inventory or commercial relationships. TikTokData is in development and no live commercial feed is connected.
